<strong>Introduction</strong></h3>
<h5>As Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa, once said, “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire, it has the power to unite people in a way that little else does.”&nbsp; We held the 2020 Taiwan Shackleton Ultramarathon to implement Mr. Mandela’s idea last weekend.</h5>
<h5>The expert of John Hopkins University predicted Taiwan might be devastated because its proximity to China. But as of April 29, Taiwan has had 429 confirmed cases, 6 deaths. This success is no coincidence. A combination of efforts by medical professionals, government, private sector and society at large has armored our country’s defenses.</h5>
<h5>The Taiwan Shackleton Ultramarathon is a short edition of Run Across Taiwan Ultramarathon (RATU) which is a 246 kilometers coast to coast race. We pick the hardest section started from Nantou Puli, the heart of the island, to Nantou Qingjing, accumulated altitude 2471 meters in 50 kilometers distance to inspire and challenge the runners. 41 runners and 15 teams, total 77 participants took part in the race. The team participants need to finish the race together and demonstrate the spirit of Sir. Shackleton.&nbsp; The following are the details.</h5>

<h3><strong>Runners’ presentation</strong></h3>
<h5>A young runner, Mr. CHU Hung-Jen wins 50 km ultramarathon. Successful participation in such a race presupposes hard physical work, mental strength and experience. Mr. CHU is a running club coach. Since his classes have been paused, he took the opportunity to train himself to prepare for his 100K challenge. He leads the field in personal category from start-to-finish in a really fast time of 5 hours 16 minutes.&nbsp;</h5>
<h5>While in team side, Mr. HSU Ko-Jen and Mr. WU Yen-Te, set the team course record by 5 hours 46 minutes. When they arrived the finish line, Mr. WU gives his partner Mr. HSU a big thank-hug for the encouragement along the route, that really help him keep the pace and finally successfully get the first place in team category.</h5>
<h5>The next ultra-race of CTAU is the Taiwania Ultra Trail 100K in Cilan Forest on September 19-20, 2020. It will be the beginning race of 2020-2021 seasons.</h5>

The 20th edition of Soochow 24hr race was held at the campus track of Soochow University, Taipei city. It is the 4th oldest 24hr race in the world and is celebrating its 20 years’ anniversary this year.&nbsp; The Soochow 24h race is one of the most competitive ultraraces in the world, it owns IAU Gold race label four times. Many elite runners took part in this race and wished to refresh their personal best. It produced two world WBPs, three continental best performances and dozens of national records in the past 20 years<br>

This race is an invitational race, only 40 elite ultrarunners are invited. Half of them are local runners whose best performance should over IAU national level. This year, runners from 9 countries, Japan, India, Poland, Spain, Czech Republic, Hungary, Hong Kong, Australia, Malaysia, take part in the race. Top four male runners of last year are invited, but the ranks are different from last year because of competitive race.</h5>

<h3><strong>Runners’ presentation</strong></h3>

In the men’ division, Mr. Ishikawa, the IAU 24hr World Champion of 2017, did not take part in this year’s WC and aiming to win the race. While Mr. Ivan Penalba Lopez who was the winner of last year is defending his title and hope to refresh national record. Ivan takes the lead in the beginning. He rushes to lead Mr. Ishikawa for 10 laps and then stick to run with him in the following stage of the race. Ivan speed up and run alone when he found the leading distance has been closed up. While Ishikawa ran his own steady pace, 13.5 kilometer per hour, started from the beginning. The two world class ultrarunners’ competition attract all the audiences and make the race even more exciting to watch. At about 18th hours, 3 AM, Ishikawa started to close the gap between he and Ivan. Ishikawa’s final result is 279.427 km and he wins the Soochow 24hr race for the second time. He sent his gratitude to his opponent Ivan in the post-race Press conference. While Ivan showed the ultra spirit in the awarding ceremony, he insisted to listen the winner’s speech from Ishikawa and gave him his applause on his way to visit the toilette. In the women’ side, Ms. Wu, the winner of 2018 Hong Kong 24h race, ran at very steady pace and won her first champions outside Hong Kong. Apparently many runners do not recover from the tiredness from the IAU 24hrace World Championship, Albi. Four male runners reach IAU international level, only one person short to apply IAU Gold race label this year. Dr. Pan, the President of Soochow University, still congratulated the organizing team for hosting a good race and wished the 20th version of race even more sucessful next year.<br>

<h3><strong>Introduction</strong></h3>
<h5>The 8<sup>th</sup> version of Yilan Dongshan River Ultramarathon is held at Yilan Dongshan River Water Park. The easy-going time limit makes it the first choice for the freshmen of ultra-marathon. The 100 miles race started on 9 PM, Nov. 22. Besides 100miles, there are 100km-Night, 100km-Day, 50km; and also offer shorter sub-events such as regular and half marathon, and a 10km fun run. &nbsp;Altogether, 875 runners take part in the race. &nbsp;The majority of foreign participants are the Hong Kong runners, there are 12 of them. Other 10 foreign runners are mostly from Asia, there are Japan, China, and Malaysia.</h5>

<h3><strong>Runners’ presentation</strong></h3>
<h5>Ms. HSIANG, Wen-Hsuan and Ms. CHOU Ling-Chun, two members of current national delegation, take part in the 100 mile race. Mr. CHEN, Chih-Yu, a young and talent runner, &nbsp;runs his first 100 miles. Ms. CHOU and Mr. CHEN lead the race after start. While in 100km category, Mr. WONG Chi-Fang and Ms. WANG, Ying-Chih, the male and female 2<sup>nd</sup> place of last year’s 100K category, show up in the night group this year. There are lots of participants came to the race year after year aiming to break their personal record.</h5>

<h5>The continuous raising temperature on the second day were a tough challenge to every runner. In 100 miles category, Ms. CHOU takes the lead from the beginning to the end, and finished the race in 16hrs 6mins 42secs. She is the only runner reach the IAU international level in the race. While in man side, Mr. CHEN and Mr. WU Bihh-Shii, the 2 runners’ leading pack, persistently run the 20K lap on the road and keep resist the heat. They finished 100 miles in 4 minutes before and after: 19hrs 08mins 46secs and 19hrs 12mins 41secs. In the end, there are 22 participants successfully break their personal record in the race.</h5>

<h5>Taipei is well known for organizing for almost 20 years a prestigious Soochow 24H international event where many world best class results were set. The race course is 10 km loop and 3 km from the athletics village in the Dajia Riverside park where all athletes will be located.</h5>
